The Tyranny Contest

As promised in the last announcement, a contest is coming, and this is it. Despite the number of years we've been around, I think this is actually our first design contest. I'm looking forward to seeing your ideas on display!

As some of the more astute folks may have noticed, the Tyranny set is labelled x/16 cards, but there were only 15 published. Number 16 is all for you. I'd like to call upon the guild members for this one.

In the next few weeks, I'd like you to post your design ideas below. They will be discussed in the forums, and eventually (beginning of February) I will choose one to be the official number 16.
IN the event that two ideas tie for best, the one first posted wins the tie breaker.

There will be prizes for top picks, including Goblin-class Minis and a role in the development of the next card set. The top 3 Runners up will get Bladebearer miniatures.

When designing, in addition to cool factor, remember to consider:

Which miniature is it benefiting? (and how easy is it for players to get that miniature).
How does it impact the metagame?
Does it help to satisfy an unmet need in the game?
Will it potentially create a problem in game balance?

Alright folks. I am looking forward to seeing your creativity.
Let the contest begin!

The figure that the 16th card benefits must either be a Goblin, Hobgoblin or Bugbear, correct?

Your call.
But it should fit the theme of the set, of course...

Cool. Is there a limit of one entry per participant, or can we propose a few? (I wont spam, I promise.)

Edit: pending a reply, I posted an entry in the general forum. Let me know if you prefer that it be posted here or in another specific thread.

This is an interesting move from the Guild. Would the Horned Devil fit the theme since he was in the DC Tyranny of Goblins set or goblinoid races only? He could really use an update even in the form of an item for him.

Nothing is off limits, but since theme is important, it would depend on your spin/story.
There are other things out there like trolls or dragons that could be touched on too.
Owlbears might be a reach, but I dunno - you all are pretty clever folks.

You must enter them here, though, since this will document the order in which they were received.
Putting them in the forums is great for discussion, though Smile

COVERT TRAINING - Tyranny Contest Entry

Edited to change lower cost from +3 to +2 and to import flavor text from the other thread into this post.

Battle Fury
For use only with Dekanter Goblin

Effective Follower: +4 to attacks while in an warband with a Primal or Goblin champion.

[ ] [ ] Dodge and Weave: Use when this creature is targeted by a ranged or area attack. That attack misses this creature, and this creature moves up to its speed.

All discussion is in this thread: http://ddmguild.com/forum/general/tyranny-contest-entries-discussion

I like the idea about a design match, so i'll give it a try as well.

Goblin Trained
For use only with Timber Wolf

Goblin Mount: Can have a small Goblin creature as a rider.

Charger: When this creature is charging, its rider has +10 Damage until end of turn and can make 1 (m) attack against target of charge.

Cost: +5

I made this item because I really enjoy the options that the warhorse and thundertusk boar offer to humans, elves and dwarves. So I figured that if you want to make Goblin warbands viable they could use a mount as well.

I'm not quite sure about the +5 cost, although I think it's reasonable to pay 10 points for a wolf mount when you compare it to the sturdier 16 point warhorse.

This item offers some great (theme band) synergies with the hobgoblin marshall and the howling moon item of the tyranny set. Just imagine a bunch of goblin skullcleavers inspired by howling moon while they are mounted on hobgoblin marshall boosted wolfs. I actually considered changing the cost to +3 and only allow a +5 damage bonus on charging, but I figured it would be easier to keep the same abilities for each mount.

Beside that, if our meta can survive human skullcleavers on warhorses I'm sure it can survive goblin skullcleavers on wolfs as well. All together, they form a kind of 27 point glass cannon. With their low defences they are very vulnerable for area effects and conditions that hinder the mount. Still, I think they would be fun to play or to play against. And to me it feels like typical goblin warfare. Vulnerable, but fast with a vicious bite.

I propose to comment on entries in the "general" forum, and keep this thread for contest entries only. That make sense?

I'll edit my other thread there to transform it into a discussion thread.

Here is a fun one:

Goblin Bomb
(for use with only the Goblin Warrior)

[] [] [] Lit Fuse: At the start of each of this creature's turns, check off a use of this power.
At end of this creature's turn, if there are no unchecked boxes, this creature and all adjacent creatures take 10 damage.

Cost +3

Flavor text: "some goblins are destined for greatness...others aren't"

A not-too-played creature, which should be relatively easy to find, and the power provides a single use of autodamage, if you can get him there and time it on his third activation Smile
The point cost is comparable to other low cost creature autodamage (Mialee and the Stirge, for example)

Satchel Charge
For use only with Goblin Delver

Powers

[ ] Deny Victory: Replaces turn, only while this creature occupies a victory area: Destroy this creature. Each adjacent creature is pushed 1 square, takes 10 fire damage and is Dazed (save ends). Until end of battle, the square that this creature occupied is pit terrain.

+4

So here´s my idea with short coment:

Bow of Light

Usable with Hobgoblin Archer
UNIQUE ITEM

+5 to range of Ranged Attack atack

( ) Area Attack Arrow of light (sight, radius 3) - all creatures in area loosing invisibility and benefits from conceal until end this creatures next round

( ) Area Attack Arrow of Great Lightning (sight, radius 2) - automatic hit, blinded

Cost: 7 pts

This might be answer to most used warbands - invisible Eyes of the Shadow and 7th Sigil.. Item is Unique and these races (goblin, hobgoblin)wil be hard to protect from killing ´em before they can use this great bow (low defences and HP). But I think it´s ok to increase chances to win..

edit: usable only with..

Tried, could you clarify the end date for submissions, and if there is a limit on number of submissions per person? Thanks!

Snig's Last Breath

For use with Snig, Worg Rider

+5pts

When this creature is eliminated, put Snig The Axe in any of it's spaces. Scores VP if eliminated.

(canceled) Barghest Mount
For use with Barghest or Grater Barghest

+5pts

This creature could have a small Goblin as a rider.
If this creature uses 2 move actions on it's turn and moves at least 8 squares, it's rider can make a Basic Melee Attack atack and this atack is a critical hit.

Concealing Cloud

For; Goblin Adept

[]Minor action; Burst 3 centered on Goblin Adept provides Conceal 6 to all goblin allies until end of next turn.

Cost=3pts.

The Goblin Adept is very weak as a tech or ranged attacker. This will give him and his allies a little longevity.

I forgot to add that this is a magic bottle that breaks open when it is smashed on the ground.

Talon's Revenge

To be used by Hobgoblin Talon of Tiamat

Cost: 7 pts

Use when Blast of Cold, damage becomes ongoing 5 cold and immobilised, save ends, AND all non-champion goblins and hobgoblins within line of sight of this creature may shift one square.

Inspired by some of movement ideas by alepulp and John, and without seeing any restriction on number of entries, I thought of this as I was falling asleep last night:

Very Large Horn
For use only with Dekanter Goblin

Gentle Nudge: (Minor Action.) Choose an adjacent creature that is Medium or smaller. Push that creature up to 2 squares.

Cost: +1

One entry per person.
Ends at the end of this month.
Feel free to post playtest results in the forums.... Smile

Entries are not final (may be modified) until the end of the month (jan 31, 2014).

Tried: one more clarification please.

Is it allowed to modify an entry after it has been made? E.g. I have reduced the cost of my item from +3 to +2 pursuant to comments on the boards. However, if you feel we shouldn't do this (to set a fun contest environment - I'm not taking this too seriously), I'll revert my item back to cost = +3.

Let us know what you think, since you're the organizer!

Allright, here´s my oppinion:

Slaver´s noose

Usable with Silent Wolf Goblin
Basic Melee Attack +5 vs ref - stunned - if miss than item is destroyed and oponent scores VP for it

( ) Melee Attack usable only when 3 or more allies adjacement to enemy - dominated (save end)

Cost +4 pts

First: I hope that noose is the right word for lasso
Second: thanks Matob for help with translation
Third: will bring more comments on the other forum
---
Edit: second one shouldn´t be basic atack, but special..
and usable with Silent Wolf Goblin

BULLHORN - Tyranny Contest Entry

For use only with Lolthbound Goblin

+1 attack with Close Attack attacks
-2 attack with Melee Attack attacks

Annoying Shriek: Whenever this creature is using Lolthbound Shriek or provokes an opportunity attack while Loltbound Shriek is not yet used: You may choose one active adjacent (non-drow, non-goblin) creature targeted or provoked and that creature is then enabled and compelled to take an opportunity attack against this creature if it is able to attack at all with a basic attack. This effect cannot be redirected. OA is resolved before Shriek or provoking action. Loltbound Shriek is considered used after any use of Annoying Shriek.

Cost: +2

Flavor text: "Revelling in distraction their shrieks cause in enemy ranks some Lolthbound Goblins wield a horn rather than pick or knife; having little regard for own life they often risk getting close enough to burst foes' ears ... or close enough to get hacked down"
